Camping at Fort Flagler

Last summer, Kim and I took the kids camping at Fort Flagler and they had so much fun and wanted to go back with Grandpa and Grandma and Mallory and Owen! Kim was able to find two sites next to each other for August 6-8 so we were able to make it happen!

Check-in at the campground wasn't until 2:30, but we were able to get on an earlier ferry and make it to the state park by close to 1. We decided to start our trip with the museum and hiking around the forts. Fort Flagler was built in 1898 and was one of three forts built to protect the Puget Sound area. It never saw any action during the war.

It's pretty incredible that we are allowed to just wander through the forts. They are really dark in some parts and there is a lot of potential to fall a long ways!

Once we could check in to our campsite, we set up camp and then headed down to the water to walk along the beach, collect rocks, dig holes, and fly kites. I didn't take any picture of the campsite, but Grandpa and Grandma slept in the bed of their truck, Kim and Thane slept in their camper van, Kelsey and I slept in our 4-man tent, and all the kids slept together in a 10-man tent! It took a little while for everyone to settle down the first night, but they actually all did quite well!

The kites were as far up as they could go!

Saturday was filled with more of the same! We walked for several miles along the beach, watching salmon jump out of the water and hunted for whales. We did see a few seals, including one seal pup that looked sick. We also played soccer, Throw Throw Avocado, and played on the playground.

There was also lots of eating, some Pictionary, roasting s'mores (over a propane fire because no wood fires were allowed) and some incredible sunsets!

We ended our trip with another visit to the beach. This time the kids all worked on building a driftwood fort! This was followed by the ferry ride back to Coupeville and a stop at Dairy Queen for some ice cream before heading back home.

We had a lot of fun and are excited for our next camping trip coming up next week!
