The Beginning of Summer Vacation

As school came to an end, I had a hard time wrapping my mind around the fact that it was June and summer was here!!

The last day of school was a Thursday and I had to work so my mom picked up the kids. Grandpa and Grandma invited them to spend the night and then they surprised the girls with a ferry ride and trip to Friday Harbor...complete with donuts and ice cream!

On the ferry....it was a bit too windy to spend much time on the outside deck.

Kyle was able to finish working early one afternoon so we headed to Hovander Park for a bike ride. The girls are still surprised every time they see me riding a bike😀

Lydia had a hard time with this narrow path, but once we were passed this, she rode almost every thing else!

We've also had a few fun days spent with cousins, went strawberry picking, and finished putting up the swingset (although I didn't take many pictures of these things!)
Rainy days mean finding creative ways to still be outside...

These two found a recipe for peanut butter cookies and made them all on their own!

Lydia's first haircut...more of a trim, really.

Father's Day hike (while I was home sleeping/working all weekend) along the Nooksack River.

When you've been wanting a new bike but they've been out of stock everywhere and you finally find the one you want...you buy it! Kyle's new bike😀

School's Out!

It's hard to believe that it's the middle of June and we are on summer vacation! This past year, while a bit different, was so good in so many ways. All three girls were in person, all year long, and, as far as I know, nobody in their classes ever had Covid (until the last week!)

They all had fantastic teachers and it was so obvious how much they cared about the kids. I've tried to take a few pictures of some of the work that they've done, and have tried to save a few of the pictures that the teachers sent home.

Lydia: We had a few struggles along the way, but Teacher Lisa and Teacher Jana were excellent and together, Lydia was able to make it through the year. She had a tendency to get really sad about halfway through the day and would become slightly irrational. Eventually, a sticker chart and ice cream dates convinced her that it was much better to be happy and a good listener all day long. Despite that, Lydia loved going to school and woke up every morning asking if it was a school day! She loved show-and-tell and learned all about counting, colors, and shapes.

Teacher Lisa leading the class on a 'Listening Walk' from school to City Park.

Her Shoebox float...she had to use ovals to make a float for their parade!

Ice cream date for three good days at school!

Haleigh: Haleigh loved school! She would talk and talk about some of the things she was learning and used English and Spanish interchangeably. She didn't speak up much in class, but she up for it at home. It is so neat to hear her trying to read and actually be interested in reading! There was an open house at school a few weeks ago, and Kyle was able to go and see her room and some of her work.

Growing a sunflower...which promptly started to die as soon as she brought it home!

Found this gem while flipping through pictures on my phone!

All ready for the last day of school!

Annaliese: Annaliese wrapped up third grade; she loves to read and write and has pretty incredible handwriting for a third grader! She wrote some fun stories and I came across some fun artwork too. Her teachers are very creative, so they would often create things out of playdoh or use leaves/sticks/whatever they could find in nature.

Senor Beroterran sent home newsletters periodically with pictures of the kids working.
Annaliese and Esme diagraming the parts of the ear.

Making telephones and talking to one another.

We are so grateful for all of the girls' teachers and classmates. It is obvious that they love these kids so much and put so much into them all year!

We wrapped things up with an end-of-the-year party hosted by Asher's family out at Lake Whatcom. It was so fun to be able to catch up with everyone.

Super Strikers

I think I've mentioned that Annaliese played soccer this spring. She was on a team of 9-year-old girls, all from Lynden. They named themselves the Super Strikers and had a fabulous season. The team had a good mix of girls who had played before and those, like Annaliese, who were playing for the first time. Coach Steph did a great job teaching them some of the rules, as well as how to have fun playing the game.

Annaliese seemed to have a good grasp of how the game worked and was frequently in the right spot at the right time! She scored a number of goals during the season and they ended up winning all games but one!
