Last week Kim and I took the kids camping at Fort Flagler, located on Marrowstone Island, near Port Townsend. It was built in the 1890s and was manned during WW1, WW2, and the Korean War to guard the entrance to Puget Sound, together with Fort Worden and Fort Casey. We arrived Tuesday evening and spent all day Wednesday and a good portion of Thursday exploring the beachfront and the gun emplacement/batteries. The weather was perfect and the kids did amazing!

Malachi and Haleigh...Malachi started with his head on that little blue pillow and Haleigh was on the green pad. But this is how they woke up...sharing a pillow! |

Auntie Kim braiding Lydia's hair (she also braided Annaliese, Haleigh, and Elias') |

We spent lots of time staring out at the water looking for whales...we were successful though because we saw an orca!! |

They made their own slide down the hill! |

Haleigh and Malachi walked along behind the rest of us. Haleigh said they 'talked about silly stuff the whole time.' |

S'mores! |
None of us knew much about Fort Flagler, but we were able to check out the museum and do a little scavenger hunt throughout the museum. After roaming around the museum, we did a bit more wandering around the grounds and found way more than we had expected!

In Port Townsend, waiting for the ferry |

Our reservation wasn't until 6:45pm, but everyone was tired and so we gave up our reservation and opted to go standby...we made it on the 3:30 ferry instead...one of the last cars on!
We had a great time! Kim and I commented that there are several things that we usually leave up to our husbands to do while we are camping...like light the stove and build the campfire, not because we can't but because they can. The bummer part of this trip was that Kim was recuperating from COVID and had a sore throat and not much of a voice. But she pulled through and we all still had a good time! The kids all said that wandering through the forts was the best part and they would all like to go back again. |
